Nyungne Retreat - The Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig (Tue, Mar 08, 2011 6:00 am - Thu, Mar 24, 2011 8:00 am)

March 8 - 24, 2011

PLEASE NOTE: The registration deadline is February 21, 2011.  Due to limited staff availability and the 10 days of Losar chanting directly preceding this retreat, we will be unable to accept any reservations after this date.  Thank you for your understanding.
Due to an overwhelming response to our January practice retreat of 8 consecutive sets of Nyungne (the Fasting Ritual and Meditation of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig), Venerable Lama Norlha Rinpoche and the KTC Sangha will be participating in another 8 sets of the Chenrezig fasting practice. This retreat will be held after Losar (the Tibetan New Year) during the auspicious Month of Miracles.

The Nyungne practice is a profound kriya tantra meditation ritual based on loving-kindness and compassion in the form of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig. The practice involves maintaining strict vows and meditating while reciting mantras and prayers, and performing prostrations and visualizations. Undertaken in sets of two days, the first day includes one vegetarian meal at noon, drinking water throughout the day as needed. The second day is a complete fast performed in noble silence. The Nyungne is renowned as a superior means to purify negative karma and accumulate great merit.

Chenrezig himself declared that completing even one Nyungne prevents rebirth in the lower realms, and the practice of eight consecutive Nyungne leads to birth in Amitabha’s pure land of Dewachen.

Guests are welcome to participate in any or all of the Nyungne sets but please note - it is necessary to arrive at KTC by 8pm the evening before any set as the practice begins as early as 5 am every day throughout the retreat.  The dates for each set are as follows:

Set 1   Begins March 8 (Tuesday) at 5:30 am.  Ends March 10 (Thursday) about 6:00 am.
Set 2   Begins March 10 (Thursday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 12 (Saturday) about 6:00 am.
Set 3   Begins March 12 (Saturday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 14 (Monday) about 6:00 am.
Set 4   Begins March 14 (Monday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 16 (Wednesday) about 6:00 am.
Set 5   Begins March 16 (Wednesday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 18 (Friday) about 6:00 am.
Set 6   Begins March 18 (Friday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 20 (Sunday) about 6:00 am.
Set 7   Begins March 20 (Sunday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 22 (Tuesday) about 6:00 am.
Set 8   Begins March 22 (Tuesday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 24 (Thursday) about 6:00 am.

Reservations are required.  Please submit an on-line reservation by February 21, 2011.  This will help us to ensure that the proper number of texts are available as well as to ensure proper meal planning.  Again, due to limited staff availability and the 10 days of Losar chanting directly preceding this retreat, we will be unable to accept any reservations after this date.

Guests attending a nyungne for the first time must speak to a Lama before doing this practice.  Please call us at 845-297-2500 and leave both your name and phone number so that we can get back to you. We do suggest that guests try to come for the 1st day of any given nyungne set, but if that is not practical, it is still possible to participate any day of the retreat.  For further details for how to participate in this way, please follow the phone instructions above.

Commemoration of Chotrul Duchen (Sat, Mar 19, 2011 7:00 am - 1:00 pm)

In honor of the full moon of the Month of the Buddha's Miracles, Chotrul Duchen, when, for fifteen days, the Buddha displayed miracles we will be offering butterlamps (as part of our weekly Tong Chö).  On this very auspicious day your merit will be multiplied 10 million times, which happens only 4 times per year.  Please join us for the chanting and/or sponsoring the chanting. Please note: this event falls in the middle of the extended Nyungne Retreat (Fasting Ritual and Meditation of 1,000-armed Chenrezig) and specifically on a day when the nyungne participants will be maintaining total silence and complete fasting.

6:00 am | Tong Chö
A traditional Tong Chö of 1,000 butter lamps, 1,000 bowls of saffron water and 300 bowls filled with rice, incense and flowers is offered weekly, accompanied by chanting of the Chenrezi practice.

10:00 am | Monlam Choga, followed by the Short Shitro Practice
Chanting of the Monlam Choga (Prayers of Auspiciousness), a practice of offering and aspiration prayers compiled by Dorje Chang Kalu Rinpoche. This is followed by the short liturgy of Shitro (Peaceful and Wrathful Deities), a profound practice from the cycle of teachings and meditations of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. We dedicate this practice to the deceased in order to purify negativities, avert obstacles in the bardo, and establish a connection with the deities that will ripen in future lives.

Set 7   Begins March 20 (Sunday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 22 (Tuesday) about 6:00 am.
Set 8   Begins March 22 (Tuesday) at 5:00 am.  Ends March 24 (Thursday) about 6:00 am.
